Tampa Bay Gets a Kick

The Tampa Bay area may be getting a 10,000 seat stadium to call home for a soccer franchise of the United Soccer League’s First Division, the League’s highest professional level. The stadium would be privately funded by both local and out of area investors. Disclosure regarding this stadium was made after Hillsborough County Commissioners gave their preliminary approval for a $15 million sports complex in Hillsborough County. Commissioner Jim Norman stated that "the new, privately funded stadium proposal could compliment a public sports complex if it ultimately wins commission approval." While there has been no formal announcement yet as to the acquisition of a new stadium or team, Tim Holt, vice president and chief operating officer for the USL, stated in a St. Pete Times interview, “I can say that we have been and are actively working to help bring a USL professional soccer team back to the area. The area has a great history of supporting professional soccer. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of an existing, proper stadium." Full story by Bill Varian, St. Pete Times
